The End of the Era of "Two White Guys"

by Nathan Mathews

For those who care about such things, it is officially the end of the era of two white guys being President and Vice President. We now officially will have either a black guy and a white guy, or a white guy and a white woman.
Hurrah, I suppose.

However, I am looking forward to a different future, where we don't think like that. It may be long after I'm dead, but it will hopefully come. A future when we don't say a black guy and a white guy or a white guy and a white woman. I long for a time when both race and sex simply don't matter. Can you imagine that? Can you imagine seeing a nominee for the first time and not saying to yourself "he's black" or "she's a woman", but instead saying "what are their beliefs" or "what experience do they have" or something else that's actually relevant.

Don't you have a problem with the idea that elections are now made or broken on the color of someone's skin or whether they hold the penis card?

I'm no trekkie, but one thing I liked about the Star Trek series was that race was never mentioned (as far as I know, I never watched after Enterprise). They didn't say "he's black" or "she's green" or...whatever.

You know, we're not a bunch of children here. We can deal with people who are different from us. We don't have to think that they are exactly like us to listen to them. We're not living in the freaking dark ages. So why can't we have a presidential election where we don't care about race or gender? Well, I know why, I understand the situation, so you don't have to answer that question.

But someday, someday I hope it won't matter anymore. Someday I hope we can get beyond prejudices and stereotypes and phobias and hangups and all the rest. I hope that, if not my children, then maybe their children can interact with people of all different types NOT because they're being hip or trendy, but for no particular reason at all.
